IF you are renting a house, flat or room then you will need tenants contents insurance to protect against theft and damage to your Laptops, iPad’s, Mobile Phones, TV’s and Sports Equipment.
Tenants will be surprised when totted up actually how much they own and what the true costs will be to replace in the event of something like a burglary. A lap top, mobile phone and decent flat screen television combined can easily cost £2000+ alone. Now add in the iPods, digital cameras, Sky box, stereo etc and you can see how the money can add up quickly to a figure that would be difficult to find if you needed to replace everything in one go.
The portability of these expensive items increases the risk of theft, therefore tenants contents insurance is a must for those renting. The other consideration of course, is that some of these gadgets such as phones are subject to a contract, which in the absence of insurance still requires settlement regardless of whether you have the item or not.
A standard tenants policy usually includes cover for the main perils of theft, fire, smoke etc. You can then decide to upgrade cover to include accidental damage or insure your personal possessions way from the home – these will cost you more, but will provide you with that extra peace of mind.
To get good cover all you have to do is go to The Property Insurer and click on the Tenants Insurance button. You will receive some good advice well worth reading (or ignoring if you are in a rush) and then can click on the get a quote button. It will take around 3-6 minutes to complete the quote and you should specify as many items as possible that are high value (around £500+) to help in the case of any claims in the future when you may be asked to prove what you owned. Photos and receipts will help here as well but are not mandatory, just good to have.
No matter how cautious we are in these tough economic times we can still never prepare for such unforeseen events, so I recommend all tenants to purchase tenants contents insurance and for those considering cover for the first time you will be surprised how cheap cover can be for that extra protection and peace of mind.
